Tarifa

The southernmost point of continental Europe at the heart of the Strait of Gibraltar, Tarifa is a unique marine hotspot where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, home to up to seven cetacean species.

Tarifa is located in the Strait of Gibraltar, within the Parque Natural del Estrecho, a biodiversity hotspot both on land and at sea. Its waters are particularly rich, supporting a wide range of marine life, including several species of cetaceans that can be observed throughout the year. The Strait of Gibraltar is home to up to seven cetacean species, including resident species such as Striped dolphinsCommon dolphinsBottlenose dolphins and Pilot whales, which are present year-round.

Sperm whales can also be seen throughout the season, with peaks in spring and summer. During the summer months, Fin whales, the second largest animals on Earth, can also be observed as they migrate towards the Atlantic.

Iberian Orcas are also occasional visitors to the Strait of Gibraltar, where they feed on Atlantic bluefin tuna as it passes through during its migration.

Tarifa is also one of the most important bird migration points in Europe. Each season, thousands of birds cross the Strait between Africa and Europe, making it a key destination for birdwatching.

The local climate is strongly influenced by two prevailing winds: Levante (from the east) and Poniente (from the west). These winds have made Tarifa a reference point for wind sports, especially kitesurfing.

In addition to its natural value, Tarifa is a typical Andalusian white town, known for its historic centre, gastronomy, bohemian atmosphere and long sandy beaches.
