FAQ - WeWhale Experiences

What kind of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) are often seen on experiences?

It varies depending on which trip you pick! Also, our experiences involve observing animals in the wild so we never know in advance which species we will see on any individual day.

In Lanzarote, cetacean species include bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and Bryde’s whales.

In Tenerife, the most often encountered species are short finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.

There are, though, 31 cetacean species recorded in the Canary Islands so it’s not uncommon to see pods of numerous oceanic dolphins or solitary giants like baleen whales or sperm whales. If we’re lucky, we might get to see shy beaked whales or majestic orcas in Tenerife. Every day is different and full of surprises!

Common species spotted in the Mediterranean sea, which you’ll possibly see on our Denia experiences, include fin whales, bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales, long-finned pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins and common dolphins

The most commonly seen species on our Sotogrande experiences are common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and striped dolphins, and with a little bit of luck, we might even see migrating fin whales or sperm whales.

How many passengers are on WeWhale experiences?

Our Lanzarote experiences accommodate up to 12 passengers, our Denia and Sotogrande experiences accommodate up to 10 passengers, and our Tenerife experiences accommodate up to 8 passengers.

The WeWhale philosophy is to have smaller trip sizes, which makes for a more personalised and comfortable experience – for both humans and cetaceans.

How are your experiences whale friendly?

We observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat, making sure not to encroach on their space or to interfere with their behaviour, including their ability to feed, rest and rear their young. We are always respectful of animals – not disturbing them and keeping distance.

No noise – a silent whale watching experience is beneficial to whales and dolphins who are highly sensitive to noise. And our eco-friendly vessels produce zero water pollutants, meaning we are safeguarding the marine ecosystem which cetaceans inhabit.

How are your experiences environmentally friendly?

Our whale watching vessels are catamarans/monohulls and refit motorboats supported by fully or hybrid electric engines. Furthermore, all our vessels are plastic-free, and we use environmentally friendly paints.

How long does a WeWhale observation experience last?

Our Shared Group Experiences in Lanzarote and Denia have a duration of 4 hours for morning trips and 2.5 hours for shared sunset experiences.

Our Tenerife Shared Group Experience and Sotogrande Shared Group Experience have a duration of 2.5 hours.

Our Private Group Experiences vary in duration – check individual pages for more information.

Are your experiences suitable for children?

Our Lanzarote, Tenerife, Denia and Sotogrande experiences are suitable for children from babies upwards.

We recommend that when travelling with infants on the Tenerife experiences (0-24 months), you bring a baby carrier.

Is there a toilet on board?

Due to the size of the craft, there isn’t a toilet on board our Lanzarote and Sotogrande experiences so make sure to visit the restroom before we embark on our trip. Bathrooms are available a few minutes walking distance from where our boats depart.

A toilet is available on board our Tenerife and Denia experiences.

What should I bring on an experience?

The main thing to bring is your sense of curiosity! You should wear non-slip shoes and bring sun protection and a hat and sunglasses in case it is sunny, and a jacket in case it gets a bit chilly out at sea.

If you know in advance that you’re prone to seasickness, you may want to buy tablets at a pharmacy and take them at least one hour before departure.

Are there refreshments on board?

Water, organic refreshments, and snacks from local gourmet providers are included with our experiences.

What happens if a trip is cancelled?

It usually only happens due to poor weather but if a WeWhale trip needs to be cancelled, we will get in touch with you and you will have the option to re-book for another trip (subject to availability) or to get a refund.

How do I book a WeWhale trip?
