Denia

The coastal city of Denia joined our WeWhale locations in summer 2024, with four whale and dolphin observation experiences on offer to visitors and locals alike.

What makes it special?

Dénia is one of the most privileged destinations on the Costa Blanca for whale and dolphin watching. In its waters, it is possible to observe resident species such as the bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin, common dolphin, long-finned pilot whale and Risso’s dolphin, as well as the fin whale during its migration season.

Cape San Antonio, located on the northern coast of Alicante, stands out for its impressive cliffs, which give the area a striking natural beauty. Thanks to the great diversity of marine life found here, its seabed has been declared a Natural Reserve, a protected area covering 900 hectares of high ecological, scientific, landscape and recreational value.

For this reason, the presence of dolphin populations in these waters is no surprise. In addition, the fin whale — the second largest whale in the world — migrates along the Costa Blanca every year. In the summer of 2025, a total of 120 sightings were recorded.

Each year, fin whales migrate from the Ligurian Sea towards the Atlantic between March and September, with peak sightings occurring in May and June. During this migration, they pass very close to the coast of Dénia and can sometimes be observed in waters as shallow as 40 metres. The return migration to the Mediterranean and the Ligurian Sea takes place between October and January, although during this period the animals usually travel through deeper waters than in summer.

What to do in Dénia

Dénia is a historic port city crowned by its Andalusian-era castle, which overlooks the hill beside the harbour. At its base lies the Archaeological Museum, while nearby streets lead to the baroque Church of the Assumption and the Town Hall square.

A visit to the Cova Tallada is also highly recommended and can be reached on foot or by kayak. Other points of interest include the Cape San Antonio lighthouse, perched on a 160-metre cliff, and the Torre del Gerro, where the volunteer group “Eucrante” carries out fin whale monitoring during the summer season. For nature lovers, the Montgó Natural Reserve is another excellent option.
